Instructional Plans
Rationale:
In order to infuse youth with multicultural tolerance and acceptance that is upheld by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it is necessary to introduce them to other cultures across all areas of the curricula. A focus on Aboriginal heritage and cultural ways is paramount in this quest as they are the forefathers of our land. However, unknown to many is the impact that Aboriginal culture has had on many mainstream sports. They were the original lacrosse and archery competitors in days long past. There are numerous traditional games and sport events that were practices by Aboriginal Peoples across Canada that can naturally fit into the elementary and junior high Physical Education curriculum.
Introductory Activity:
Since all of the lessons will focus on traditional Aboriginal games or sport activities and events it is necessary to spend a significant block of time introducing students to Aboriginal People. Who were they? Where did they live? How did they live? What languages were spoken? What did they do for fun and relaxation?
